John Quincy Adams, the but former President to be elected to the Firm of Representatives, earned the nickname "Old Human being Eloquent."

On the date, the House of Representatives elected Secretarial assistant of State John Quincy Adams as President. Following an inconclusive Electoral College result, the House performed the constitutionally prescribed role of deciding the 1824 presidential election. Andrew Jackson of Tennessee had won the pop vote and commanded 99 balloter votes. He was followed in the electoral tally by Adams (84), Treasury Secretary William Crawford (41), and Speaker of the Firm Henry Clay (37). Speaker Clay was excluded from the House vote because he did non finish in the top three. The wily Kentuckian, all the same, yet played a decisive office by supporting Adams, whom he knew to share his nationalist calendar. On the appointed 24-hour interval, each state delegation got one vote. On the offset election xiii state delegations—a bulk—chose Adams every bit President. Jackson received 7 votes; Crawford got 4. Afterwards, President Adams nominated Clay as his Secretary of Land, reigniting rumors that a deal had been struck before the vote.
